State legislative updates
The 2008 legislative session was a thirty day session this year,
and it ended February 14, 2008. There was not a lot of action on
matters specific to motorcyclists. The NMMRO was watching the bills
that would increase penalties for crimes committed by gang members.
Our concern was that the definition of a gang in the legislation was
too vague, and if passed into law, would unfairly incriminate
innocent motorcycle club members. This legislation was quickly
defeated in the first house committee that considered the bill.
Legislators commented that there was just not enough time to work on
this bill in a thirty day session because they already had a full
plate with financial and health care bills.
A couple of bills were introduced proposing new specialty license
plates. While these plates would have been made available to
motorcyclists, these bills never made it out of committee. The state
legislative webpage points out that the Department of Motor Vehicles
does not have the capacity to account for anymore specialty license
plates at this time and any new specialty plates can't be produced
until at least mid 2009 anyway.
